What do you think? 12 comments
I don’t understand the fascination with this site. I find it very hard to look at, with the eye gouging contrast distracting from the content. Underneath all of that, it is a very traditional layout: logo and main nav at the top, main content on the left with a sidebar on the right.
Ugly + Boring ? Awesome.
@Joe, ugly + boring??? You really think that?
Maybe Farrow should take some pointers from you:

@Ed - Ouch. I agree that site is damn ugly, but that was a long time ago, and I don’t claim to be perfect.
I do find the Deconstruction site very hard to look at, maybe I’m missing the novelty of it. Is there anything positive you have to say about this site? Seems very illuminating that you chose to criticize my work, instead of pointing out anything interesting about theirs.
This is the complete opposite of ugly and boring. If anything, its unique, and because of that it’s memorable, and visually appealing. I agree that there is a lot going on, but I think that the layout it’s well structured. I would say that this site is not meant for everyone, but I’m certainly a fan! :D
The colour pallet and use of grid is immense, typography as tight as a ducks butt plus simple but engaging to use.
Joe, apologies for pulling you up on a an old site we all have plenty of clangers in the closet :) Why do you think I haven’t put my site in ;)
Was just being an annoying internet warrior!!!
But yeah I do like the site, everyone is entitled to an opinion thats the beauty of design.
Pretty slow to load new pages on the site though, need to sort that out!
I love sites that take big risks and push people on what they expect out of visual design. Deconstruction’s design is far from perfect (what the hell is perfection anyway?) but I applaud Farrow/Kleber for trying something and seeing it through.
If I were being critical, the scattered boxes sometimes make it hard to navigate through the site, but after a few minutes you pick up on the color structure and then it’s smooth sailing.
This is a very unique site, something out of the ordinary. I get a bit bored of looking at the same clean ‘safe’ options. This website pushes boundaries and reflects the company.
Very nice!
This site clearly has a target market - all you have to do is check the history page: http://www.deconstructionrecords.co.uk/history/
Personally, I like the approach they took, but the overall finish isn’t all there. For example: it doesn’t scale, and doesn’t fit in a 1024 screen, which means it can’t be used properly on an iPad (a device which, we can safely assume, is used by the same people who fit into this site’s target market).
It’s a step in the right direction though. The web allows for so much freedom, yet it seems that everyone who claims to be a “designer” offering “unique and original” designs are doing anything but that.
I love it—It takes risks and I think they pay off. We need more originality in design
@Joe, I don’t think Ed was out of line when he criticized your own work. When you label a site with harsh criticism like “Ugly + boring” and your own work looks amateur at best, you come off as very arrogant
So being critical is now considered arrogant? I didn’t just say it was ugly and boring, I explained that I thought the high contrast is distracting and the layout is traditional.
I think it’s sad that no one can be critical without fear of retaliation. @kev, don’t you think it’s hypocritical to call me out for being harshly critical, and in the same sentence call my work “amateur at best?” Try expressing yourself in a constructive manner. What is it that you find amateurish? I encourage feedback when it is something I can act on, not just name calling because someone doesn’t agree with me.
I guess we should all just pat each other on the back, and stfu when we don’t like something.
Nobody is saying you can’t be critical Joe, I believe you misread my post. I never mentioned that saying the contrast was distracting and the layout was traditional was arrogant. I wouldn’t have taken issue to your post if you had just left off the “ugly + boring? Awesome” part, because yes your other criticisms were constructive and with reason behind them.
As to me stooping down to your level, I apologize.
I like this site but background music that starts automatically is a faux-pas in my books.
